Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt Honored at ‘Top Blacks in Healthcare’ Gala
April—LaQuandra Nesbitt, MD, MPH, Reede Scholar ‘ 04 was among the list of 15 African Americans honored as tops in the field. BlackDoctor.org (BDO), the leading online health destination for African Americans, and The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health announced the highly-anticipated list of distinguished honorees at the 5th Annual Top Blacks in Healthcare Awards Gala. This celebration of Black excellence took place April 26, 2018 at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC.
“These individuals have reached the highest levels in their careers, despite challenges, and BlackDoctor.org is honored to celebrate their success. Their trailblazing work ensures that everyone has access to quality healthcare,” said Reggie Ware, President and CEO of BlackDoctor.org.
Nesbitt is currently the Director of Health, DC Department of Health. A Board-certified family physician, previously, Nesbitt served as Senior Deputy Director for the Community Health Administration and Senior Deputy Director for the Center for Policy, Planning, and Evaluation at DOH.
| Yvette Roubideaux, M.D., M.P.H. elected to Harvard Board of Overseers
May —Yvette Roubideaux, M.D., M.P.H., was recently elected by Harvard alumni to serve on the Harvard Board of Overseers for a 6 year term. She was invited to run in the election by the official nominating committee, and was among the 5 individuals elected to full terms from the 8 total candidates on the ballot mailed to alumni from all of Harvard’s schools. The Harvard Board of Overseers advises University leadership, has influence over the strategic direction of the University, and oversees the review process of Harvard’s schools and departments. Upon the news of her election, she stated, “I am honored to be elected by Harvard alumni to serve as a Harvard Overseer. Thank you to all the Harvard alumni and Reede Scholars for your votes. I feel our fellowship experience has prepared all of us to succeed in these types of leadership positions. I welcome input on how we can ensure that Harvard is a place where every student has the best chance to succeed.” Dr. Roubideaux was in the inaugural class of Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy in 1996-1997 (now named the Mongan Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Minority Health Policy). She is especially grateful to bring an American Indian voice and experience to the Harvard Board of Overseers since Harvard’s founding Charter in 1650 dedicates the institution to the "the education of the English & Indian Youth of this Country…..” Dr. Roubideaux is currently the Director of the Policy Research Center at the National Congress of American Indians where she help data inform policy for American Indian/Alaska Native tribes. |

We need representatives from each class to volunteer to make the 10th our best ever!
This summer I traveled to Australia, the great down under! I toured the country, learning about the healthcare system while making new friends. I caught up with a few Reede Scholars while in Washington, DC and I represented you at the National Medical Association in Orlando, FL. The energy of the membership this year is palpable and I look forward to your continued participation on our bi-monthly general body meetings and committee calls.
ORLANDO, FL | 9th Annual Reede Scholars Health Equity Symposium
May—Phillip Woods, DMD, MPH, Reede Scholars ’02, served as moderator for the 9th Annual Reede Scholars Health Equity Symposium which focused on integration of primary care and oral health care. Highlighting the importance oral health to overall health, speakers presented a seamless discourse and evidence of improved health outcomes when primary care and oral health care are integrated. Collaborative care and inter-professional care are complimentary models of healthcare along with utilization of auxiliary professionals.
The Reede Scholars Annual Vision Award 2018 was awarded to Dr. Joan Reede, our organizational namesake. Dr. Mary Fleming presented the award and expressed gratitude to Dr. Reede for her vision and leadership, stating, "you are the reason we exist; we are who we are because of you." In accepting the award Dr. Reede thanked her, and stated proudly that, "You all's amazing deeds, the amazing contributions you make each day, is all the thank you I need." The Reede Scholars Annual Vision Award is given as an honor to an individual or individuals who contribute above and beyond to the Reede Scholars growth and development.

May—Christina Rosenthal, DDS, MPH, Reede Scholar ‘13 served as commencement speaker for the 2018 ceremony for The University of Tennessee College of Dentistry on Thursday, May 17, 2018. The College of Dentistry was founded in 1878, and she is the first African-American to serve in this capacity. Her brief, inspiring message focused on three key points. 1) Dentistry is a practice not a perfect. Give yourself permission to make mistakes. If you give grace to yourself, extend it to others. 2) Learn to enjoy the journey. 3) Your hands are extensions of God. With them, lies great responsibility.

Dr. Kimberly Chang featured in US News: Hidden Victims
“Doctors have been seeing these patients for a long time, but we just never had the terminology or awareness that this was human trafficking," says Dr. Kimberly Chang, who works with minors trafficked for sex work at the Oakland, California-based Asian Health Services. "There's not a clear consolidation of scientific symptoms that says, 'This person is being trafficked,' unlike, say, something like an infectious disease," says Chang, who also is a co-founder of the HEAL Trafficking network, which takes a public health approach to the issue. | That same ambiguity applies to trafficking at large, as exactly how many people are sold for sex or labor in the U.S. remains a mystery. Polaris, a nonprofit that operates the National Human Trafficking Hotline, tallied 8,759 cases and 10,615 individual victims of human trafficking last year. The majority of victims were female, of adult age and trafficked for sex.

“Working in a clinic for underserved teenagers, Chang began to recognize a troubling pattern: Patients sometimes had bad bruises, were regularly intoxicated, came in repeatedly for sexually transmitted infections or were angry or shut down. She says she "just kind of treated their medical issues" for a while – until she realized some of these issues could indicate the teens were being exploited in what's been referred to as modern-day slavery.”
