Greetings Scholars. As the fall came to a close and winter looms, a few of us were able to find a little warmth in sunny San Diego. APHA allows us an opportunity to be enriched by the work of Reede Scholars around the country, others who are also working in the realm of health equity and also we had the opportunity to fellowship with one another during the Harvard Alumni reception and Reede Schoars Dinner. The closing session of this year's APHA rang close to my heart. The panelists discussed challenges in women's health especially as they relate to maternal mortality in this United States.

Our Fall Board of Directors meeting took place on November 12th. We had the opportunity to orient the new board members to the Executive Agenda for Reede Scholars, hear updates from the committees and plan for the 2019 Leadership Retreat.

We are excited about the 10th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Health Equity Symposium. Our dynamic panel is composed of both nationally renowned speakers as well as two of our own Reede Scholars. Please visit our website to REGISTER.

Dec—The future of healthcare is digital. Digital technologies have transformed how people globally communicate, socialize, learn, work, and increasingly intersect with the healthcare system. 

Touted as the ‘equalizer’, the expansion of cellphone technologies ease pressure on limited healthcare resources and democratize access to health care worldwide. Patients and consumers use digital health to access their health information, and better manage their health and wellness activities. Providers and stakeholders are using digital health technologies to reduce inefficiencies, improve access, reduce cost, and increase quality. Analysis of electronic data can help tailor care to patients’ unique characteristics and circumstances. 

On May 9, 2019, Reede Scholars, Drs. A. Seiji Hayashi and Rhea Boyd, joined by Dr. Jonathan Woodson and Sally A. Reede Scholar, Dr. Kim Narain Appointed New Chair of Committee on Women’s Rights

Dec---At APHA's November meeting, Kim Narain, MD, PhD, MPH, RS '11, was appointed Chairperson of the APHA’s Committee on Women's Rights.  Kim has been a member of the Committee for 4 years. Reede Scholar Dr. Kimberly Chang is also a member of the committee.

In accepting the appointment, Kim stated, "my goal is to continue to infuse an equity lens throughout the committee by highlighting groups that have been in the shadows, emphasizing structural barriers to health, showcasing solutions, and bringing new voices to the table."

The core mission of the committee, is combating 'gender inequities as it relates to health, health services and health career opportunities, taking a comprehensive approach that considers social, cultural, economic, educational, environmental and political factors.'
